Boy-from-WoodsDear Michael,

I know you don’t really see me, but I always see you. I watch you as you draw pictures in your maths notebook to distract yourself from the uninspired classes we take together. Even though the teacher is a total bore, these hours are my favorite moments of the week because I get to look at you and dream about you. You’re my dream prince. You’re the most handsome guy I’ve ever laid eyes on, and I wish you weren’t just my boyfriend in my dreams.

My best friend Gaby says I should be careful around you. You’re a bit of a player, after all, but she still supports me. She knows I want to stop dreaming about you and really take action during prom. At the end of June. We’re seniors, and soon we’ll all go our separate ways. And before you move to Graz to go to college there and I stay behind in good old Salzburg, I need to tell you what I feel for you. I’ll never forgive myself if I don’t.

Prom is still several months away, but I know that’ll be the best moment for me to tell you. Or maybe I want to postpone the moment for as long as I can so I can daydream about what’ll happen. What you’ll say to me. How you’ll kiss me.

My mom says I’m a dreamer and an artist. She’s right. If only I weren’t so shy. If only I could tell you I write my poems and compose my piano music with you in mind.

One day, I’ll show you what’s in my heart. But until then, I’ll keep my feelings to myself and watch you from this quiet corner of the classroom.

Happy Valentine, my Michael.
